Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science

October 20th, 2011 in Hobbies, Internet.

It was on March of this year, one month before of my arrival at CERN that Prof. Paula Vilarinho, from the Department of Ceramics and Glass Engineering of the University of Aveiro challenged me to build a website for this event she was responsible to organize.

Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science is the 2nd Joint Congress of the Portuguese and Spanish Microscopy Societies. This event is happening since 18th of October and will continue until the 21st of October in the University of Aveiro.

I accepted the challenge to build an website for this great event and chose as the main engine for it the powerfull WordPress.

This website was somehow challenging for me, because of the suden change on my life, by comming to work at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. I have spent on this website more 100 hours of work, building its structure, and image, and constantly updating the website with new information for the event (even during the event).

For this website I used a pre constructed theme and several plugins to help to get the website more functional. This website had also facebook integration.

I did everything since the renting of a server to the instalment of WordPress and the building of the website itself.

I will leave some pictures here and the link for it (while it is online):

Finally, Website Updates

June 13th, 2011 in Curriculum Vitae, News.

After nearly three months without updating my website, due to work and changes in my personal and professional life, I have finally got time to write in it, which will be followed by some periodic articles on my blog.

I will mention the most important:

  • Changes my Curriculum Vitae to match my current place of work and living;
  • Update the text About Me in the website;
  • Changed the header text to match my current situation.

As expected, my life changed completely: I’m living in France and working in Geneva, Switzerland, at CERN. Also for the first time, I began to be financially independent and live alone.

Soon, with the next articles, I can give more details about my learning experiences, both personally and professionally.

Bus Timetables – Aveiro, Barra and Costa Nova

March 10th, 2011 in Uncategorized.

Auto Viação Aveirense (AVA) is part of the Transdev group and is a portuguese company for transportation of passengers between destinations within Aveiro (Portugal) like Aveiro city, Barra, Gafanha of Nazaré, Costa Nova, Praia de Mira and Praia da Vagueira, having connection with ferryboat to São Jacinto.
They do not have a website, the timetables are not on the Internet (or on the website of Transdev), and even less in English.
I decided to do something about it, and leave here, on my website, the timetables digitalized by me.

My opinion about this company as a customer for 4 years is that AVA is a company without respect for the customer, with prices far from a high ratio of price-quality of service, in need of a serious reform and a review of its schedules and options for the customer. But, in the absence of better and for those who don’t have no other means of transport, there is no alternative.

I hope it’s helpful!

Note – All rights in the names Auto Viação Aveirense and Transdev and others present at the timetables are the responsibility and reserved of their respective owners. Also, I’m not to be held responsible for errors in the digitization of the timetables or by other changes in schedules. However, I’ll try to keep the schedule updated. If you know of updates or errors in the timetables, please contact me.

February 19th, 2011 in News, Professional.

Recently, I became an affliliate member of the International Network of Emerging Nuclear Specialists (INENS).

INENS Logo

Here is a small description, taken from INENS website:

The International Network of Emerging Nuclear Specialists is a global membership-based organisation for young professionals pursuing a career in the nuclear field. INENS was founded after the 2010 NPT Review Conference in New York with the aim of bringing together young professionals into a forum for discussion of key pressing and future nuclear issues. INENS focuses on all aspects of the nuclear field, including political, legal, scientific, technical, energy, academia, research, advocacy and campaigning and any other relevant fields. The network comprises of 3 branches: Members Directory; the Global Organisations Directory; and the Annual and Regional workshops and conferences.

This way, I’ll have access to the lastest news in this area, right to listing my publications in the INENS website and I’ll be invited to participate in the organization’s events. I thank Prof. Ana Senos for the suggestion.

BBC Horizon – What is reality?

February 15th, 2011 in Curiosities.

A few days ago a dear friend of mine, João Pereira, showed me a very interesting documentary from the BBC called ‘Horizon – What is reality? “. I found it so interesting that I decided to post it on my website.

Everything you think is real, it’s not.
Have you ever thought about the effect it would have on your life, if you had taken a different decision at some important point of your life? Do you think this is not related to modern physics? Think better.

This documentary is about the latest and most interesting topics of modern physics: quarks, the holographic principle, quantum computers, event horizons, parallel universes, the Higgs boson and black holes.
How can all of this be in a documentary? See for yourself.
I will leave the documentary here. It has about one hour, but once you start watching, you can’t stop it.
